The roots of Miango Rest Home trace back to the late 19th century, when three young missionaries – Walter Gowans, Thomas Kent, and Roland Bingham felt a deep calling to bring the Christian gospel to the heart of West Africa, referred to then as “the Sudan”. The journey was perilous, and within a year, Gowans and Kent had tragically died of illness. Bingham, however, persisted.

By 1910, Bingham had gathered a modest team of 20 missionaries, serving in remote parts of Nigeria such as Patigi, Egbe, and Wushishi. Unlike British colonial officials who could travel home for rest, missionaries needed a place within Africa to recuperate physically, mentally, and spiritually. Thus was born the idea of a sanitarium, a place of healing and rest.

Dr. Andrew Stirett was tasked with finding a suitable location. After a rigorous three-week journey through the highlands of Nigeria, he selected Miango, captivated by its cool climate, rolling hills, and scenic tranquility.
