Although it was founded on June 7, 2012, the Federal Medical Centre in Abuja was officially put into operation by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on January 28, 2013.
The hospital initiative originated from the Beijing Summit, a meeting for China-African collaboration, which took place from June 2–21, 2008. Nigeria received an offer from the People’s Republic of China to build and equip four remote primary schools and one comprehensive hospital. A memorandum of agreement was signed in this regard between the Federal Ministry of Health and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria. The National Planning Commission reaffirmed this agreement by supporting the idea that the Federal Capital Territory’s health care delivery system will be expanded by the 150-bed hospital, which will replace the crowded Federal Staff Hospital in Garki II.

With additional land space, FMC Abuja aims to enhance services further, including plans for a trauma center and nuclear medicine services.
The leadership, including Prof. Saad Ahmed, the Chief Medical Director, expressed immense excitement and gratitude for the Federal Government’s support. Hon. Minister Joseph Ekumankama praised Dr. Aisha Buhari’s commitment to FMC Abuja’s development, while Dr. Alex Tosan Ideh, Chairman of the FMC Board, emphasized the complex’s significance in motivating a more productive workforce.
